How to Duplicate a Mate (Clone & Cross-Validate)
Learn how to duplicate any Mate in one click to safely experiment, test different LLM models, and cross-validate AI responses on allmates.ai.

Overview
The Mate Duplication feature lets you create an exact copy of any existing Mate with a single click. The duplicate inherits all of the original's instructions, Knowledge files, attached Tools, and parameters — and becomes a fully independent agent the moment it's created. Whether you want to safely test new prompts or run a cross-validation between two AI models, duplication is the fastest way to get there.

How to Duplicate a Mate
Go to the Mate Settings of the Mate you want to copy (click the Mate's name or the settings icon).
Click the Duplicate button.
A new Mate is instantly created with the same name (prefixed or suffixed to distinguish it from the original).
Rename your new Mate and adjust any settings you need — such as the LLM model, instructions, or access permissions.
Your duplicate Mate is ready to use in any Workspace, Collab, or Personal Chat.
💡 Tip: The duplicate is completely independent. Changes made to the copy will never affect the original Mate.
What Gets Duplicated?
Key Use Cases
🧪 Safe Experimentation
Want to try a new system prompt or change the Mate's behavior without risking your production setup? Duplicate the Mate, make your changes on the copy, and test freely. Your original Mate stays untouched.
✅ Cross-Validation (The Twin Technique)
One of the most powerful uses of duplication is AI cross-validation. Here's how it works:
Duplicate your Mate and assign a different LLM model to the copy (e.g., original uses GPT-4o, duplicate uses Claude 3.5 Sonnet).
Ask the first Mate to perform a complex task — data analysis, contract review, research summary, etc.
Ask the duplicate Mate to review and verify the first Mate's output.
Discrepancies between the two responses highlight areas that need human review, dramatically reducing the risk of hallucinations.
💡 Tip: This technique is especially valuable for high-stakes tasks like financial analysis, legal document review, or any output that will be shared externally.
⏱️ Template-Based Mate Creation
Have a well-configured Mate that works great for one team? Duplicate it and adapt it for another team or use case in seconds — no need to rebuild from scratch.
Tips & Best Practices
💡 Rename immediately: Give your duplicate a clear, descriptive name right away (e.g., "Contract Analyst — Claude Validator") to avoid confusion.
🎯 Use different models for cross-validation: The Twin Technique only works well when the two Mates run on different LLMs. Mixing model families (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google) gives the most independent perspectives.
✅ Review permissions after duplication: The duplicate inherits the original's access settings. Double-check that the right team members have access before deploying it in a Collab.
⚡ Use duplicates as staging environments: Test prompt changes on the duplicate before applying them to your production Mate.
