Finding conversations, workspaces, Mates and tools by name

Where each search field is, what it finds by name or title, and what it does not search.

Last updated About 6 hours ago

allmates.ai has three search fields. Each one finds items by their name or title, among the items the app has loaded for you. None of them searches the content of the messages. This article explains where each search is, what it finds and what it does not find. It is for every member.

Which search to use

You look for

Use

A private chat, a workspace, a Mate or a tool

The universal search (Cmd/Ctrl + K)

A conversation of a workspace, from anywhere in the app

The sidebar search (Search workspaces)

A conversation or a folder on the workspace page you are viewing

The page search (Search chats...)

Search in the content of messages is not available yet.

The universal search finds a private chat, a workspace, a Mate or a tool by its name, and starts common actions from the keyboard.

  • Keyboard shortcut: press Cmd + K on macOS or Ctrl + K on Windows and Linux. The shortcut works everywhere in the app, even while you type in the composer.
  • Sidebar: click the magnifier icon at the top of the sidebar. The icon is hidden when the sidebar is collapsed.

Typing the letter "k" alone never opens the search. You must hold Cmd or Ctrl.

Quick actions

The Quick actions group is always at the top:

  • New chat: opens the new-chat page.
  • New Mate: creates a Mate, if your plan allows it.
  • New workspace: creates a workspace, if you can create one.

What it finds

Type at least two letters. The results update as you type, and tolerate small typos. They show in four groups:

  • Private Chats: your private chats, by title. Archived chats are not in the results. You can sort them by Created or Relevance.
  • Workspaces: the workspaces you can see, by name.
  • Mates: the Mates you can use, by name and description. Selecting a Mate opens a new chat with that Mate.
  • Tools: the tools of your organization, by name and description.

The universal search does not list the conversations of your workspaces. To find one, use the sidebar search or the workspace page (below).

With an empty search field, each group shows its first three items.

Filter the results

Click the filter button (Toggle filters) to show the filters: All, Private Chats, Workspaces, Mates, Tools. Press Tab and Shift + Tab to move from one filter to the next.

Preview pane

On a computer or a tablet, a Preview pane on the right shows the details of the selected workspace, Mate or tool. Click Toggle preview to hide or show it. The app remembers your choice. On a phone, the search opens full screen, without the preview pane.

Keyboard navigation

  1. Type your keyword.
  2. Press the Up and Down arrows to select a result.
  3. Press Enter to open it.
  4. Press Esc to close the search.

If your plan includes workspaces, the field Search workspaces sits at the top of the workspace list in the sidebar. The sidebar stays next to every page, so this is also the search you use while a conversation is open.

  • It filters the sidebar by name: workspaces, folders and conversations whose name contains the text you type.
  • It finds the conversations of the workspaces the sidebar has loaded: the workspaces you expanded and the workspace you are in. In a workspace that stays collapsed, only the workspace name can match. Expand the workspace first, then search.
  • When nothing matches, the sidebar shows "No matching navigation item".

The Private chats list has no search field of its own: use the universal search.

On the page of a workspace, or of one of its folders, type in Search chats... to filter the list.

  • It filters the folders and conversations of the level you view, by name, and tolerates small typos.
  • It does not look inside the subfolders. To find a conversation in a folder, open the folder, then search.
  • The conversations under Archived are not filtered.
  • When nothing matches, the page shows "No matching chats or folders".

The rest of the workspace page is described in other articles: sort and folders in "Organize workspace conversations with folders", the conversation menu in "Managing Your Workspace Conversations", and the settings gear in "Creating Your First Workspace".

Go back with the breadcrumb

In a conversation, the top of the page shows its path, for example Workspace > Folder > Conversation. Click the workspace or a folder in this path to go back to it. Click the conversation name to open its actions.

Good to know

  • The searches ignore the case of the letters, but not the accents: "resume" does not find "Résumé".
  • A clear title makes a conversation easier to find. Rename a conversation when its topic changes. See "Managing Your Workspace Conversations".
