Segments: compare teams across every dashboard

Save a group of members as a segment and filter every Analytics dashboard to that group.

Last updated About 12 hours ago

A Segment is a saved group of members, defined by rules on their email, name, role, status or language. When you apply a Segment, every dashboard shows only the activity of those members. Use Segments to follow the adoption of one team, one country or one role. This article is for people with access to the organization dashboards: Owners, Admins and Users with Analytics full access.

Analytics is not included in every offer.

Create a Segment

  1. In Analytics, click Segments in the sidebar.
  2. Click New segment.
  3. In Name, type a name, for example "Support team".
  4. In Mode, choose how the rules combine:
    • All rules: a member must match every rule.
    • At least one rule: a member must match one rule or more.
  5. Under Rules, set the first rule: pick a Field, an operator, then type a value.
  6. To add a rule, click Add. To remove a rule, click the delete icon next to it.
  7. Click Preview to count the members that match. The button shows the result, for example "12 members".
  8. Click Save.

The Segment shows in the Available segments list.

Fields

Field

What it matches

Email

The member's email address.

Display name

The member's name as shown in the app.

Pseudo

The member's username.

Role

The organization role: owner, admin, user, viewer or suspended.

Status

The member's status in the organization.

Language

The member's language code in the app, for example fr-FR or en-GB.

Operators

starts with, contains, does not contain, ends with, equals, is in list and is not in list.

With is in list and is not in list, you can paste many values at once. Separate them with commas, semicolons or line breaks. This is useful to build a Segment from a list of email addresses.

Values are not case-sensitive.

Examples

  • One team by email: Email is in list with the addresses of the team.
  • One company domain: Email ends with @example.com.
  • French speakers: Language starts with fr.
  • Regular members only: Role equals user.

Apply a Segment

You can apply a Segment in two places:

  • From the header. Open the Segment selector at the top of any page and pick a Segment. Pick All members to remove the filter.
  • From the Segments page. Click Use next to a Segment. The active Segment shows the Active badge.

The Segment stays applied when you move between dashboards and when you change the period. Your choice is kept in this browser for each organization.

Compare two teams: apply the first Segment and note the figures, then apply the second one on the same period.

Edit or archive a Segment

On the Segments page, in the Available segments list:

  • Click the edit icon to change the name, the mode or the rules, then click Save.
  • Click the archive icon to remove the Segment from the list and from the selector.

Archiving applies at once, with no confirmation, and the app cannot restore an archived Segment. If the archived Segment was applied, the dashboards go back to All members.

Good to know

  • Segments belong to the organization. Everyone with access to the organization dashboards sees, uses, edits and archives the same Segments.
  • Rules are checked against the current member data. A member who changes role or email moves in or out of the Segment automatically.
  • The Inactive users table of the Engagement page follows the active Segment. Narrow the Segment to export a shorter list. See "Strategic Dashboards".
  • Users without full access do not see Segments. Their User Activity page always shows their own activity.
