Using Speech-to-Text: Talk, Don't Type!

Typing long messages, detailed instructions or complex ideas takes time. With Speech-to-Text, you speak your message and allmates.ai turns it into text in the message box. You then review the text and send it to your Mates and teammates. Speech-to-Text works in every message box of the app, on a computer and on a phone.

Dictate a message

1. In the message box, select the microphone icon (Start recording), next to the send button.
2. The first time, your browser asks for access to your microphone. Allow it.
3. Speak. The recording bar replaces the buttons of the message box (see below).
4. When you finish, select the red square button (Finish dictation).
5. Wait a few seconds. The microphone icon shows a loading indicator while allmates.ai transcribes your recording.
6. The text appears in the message box. Review it and correct it if necessary.
7. Send the message as usual.

The text appears only after you stop the recording. You do not see the words while you speak.

The recording bar

While you record, the recording bar shows:

• a red dot that pulses while the recording is on,
• a timer (for example "1:25"),
• a waveform that moves with your voice. If the waveform stays flat, the microphone does not pick up your voice.
• a trash icon (Cancel dictation) to discard the recording,
• a red square button (Finish dictation) to stop the recording and get the text.

The text that you typed before the recording stays visible above the bar. You cannot edit it while you record. The transcribed text is added to it.

Discard a recording

Select the trash icon (Cancel dictation). The recording stops. No text is added to the message box.

If you leave the page while you record, the recording stops and no text is added.

Automatic stop

• After a long silence: the recording stops by itself. allmates.ai transcribes what you said before the silence.
• After 50 minutes: the recording stops by itself, and the app shows "Maximum recording time reached (50 minutes). The recording has been automatically stopped." allmates.ai transcribes what you recorded.

If the recording contains no sound at all, the app shows an error message and adds no text.

Automatic language detection

You do not need to select a language. allmates.ai detects the language that you speak.

Good to know

• You cannot send the message while you record or while the transcription runs.
• A long recording can take more time to transcribe. The app can show messages while it prepares a large recording. Wait until the text appears.
• On devices that support it, the screen stays on while you record.
• If the recording fails, check that your browser has access to your microphone, then try again.

Tips for best results

• Speak clearly and at a moderate pace.
• Record in a quiet place.
• Always read the text before you send it, to catch transcription errors.
• Use Speech-to-Text for long messages, detailed feedback or complex instructions. It is often faster than typing.
