Who is online and who is writing

Read the presence dots on members' avatars and the typing indicator in shared conversations.

In a shared conversation, allmates.ai shows which members look at the conversation now and which members type a message. You see this on the members' avatars and above the message box. This article explains what each signal means. It is for every member who works with teammates in a workspace conversation.

The dot on a member's avatar

A member's avatar can carry a small dot. You see these avatars in two places:

  • In the conversation header, next to the Mates' avatars. It shows every member of the conversation.
  • Next to each message that a member sent.

The dot tells you the member's status in this conversation:

A green dot

The member has this conversation open, in the active browser tab.

A grey dot

The member uses allmates.ai but does not look at this conversation now: other tab, other window or other page.

No dot

The member is not connected to allmates.ai in this organization.

The status updates live. You do not need to reload the page.

When a member becomes "away"

A member's dot turns grey as soon as the conversation is not in front of them:

  • They switch to another browser tab.
  • They click in another window or application.
  • They open another conversation or another page of the app.

The dot turns green again when they come back to the conversation.

When a member goes offline

The dot disappears when the member signs out, closes allmates.ai or loses the connection. It also disappears for a member who switches to another organization.

The "is writing" indicator

When another member types in the message box of the conversation, a line appears at the bottom of the conversation, above the message box. It shows the member's avatar, the member's name and three animated dots. Screen readers announce "{name} is writing...".

  • The indicator appears when the member presses a key in the message box.
  • It disappears when the member sends the message, a few seconds after the member's last key press, or when the member leaves the conversation or the browser tab.
  • If several members type at the same time, you see one line for each member.
  • You never see the indicator for yourself.

Good to know

  • Presence is per organization. A member who belongs to several organizations shows as connected only in the organization they use now.
  • Presence and the typing indicator concern members only. Mates do not have a presence dot. While a Mate answers, you see its answer build in the conversation.
  • In a private chat, you are the only member, so you see no other presence dot and no typing indicator.
  • In the member list of a mention (@), avatars do not show a presence dot.
  • The status shows whether the conversation is in front of the member, not whether they are at the computer. A member who keeps the conversation open in a tab in front of them, but is away from the computer, still shows a green dot.
